Of Stone and Water ❖ De pierres et d'eau
Historic Five span bridge in Pakenham, Ontario I have lived in Ottawa for over 20 years and I had never seen this bridge, which is only 50 minutes from my home. Sometimes, you don't have to travel very far to see some interesting places. If I had been in a foreign country and was travelling close to where this bridge is, I would have made it a point to go see it. But in my own "backyard", I only found out about this existence of this bridge 4 years ago and it took that much longer to make it there!!! My European friends are used to seeing this type of bridges, but as I found out, this one is the only one of its kind in North America. Built in 1901, this bridge was constructed by Scottish stonemasons O’Toole & Keating of Ottawa. Made of locally quarried stones, this five stone arches bridge spans 82 metres (268feet) across the Mississippi River, in Lanark county. Hope you all had a great week-end. via blue_iris http://500px.com/photo/91402731
