Dead Man

I’d love to tell you that if you are adventurous, willing to go off trail, bush whack, cliff climb, follow animal trails, wade creeks, or brave poison oak you might be able to find this little gem. But, no. 1-1/2 years ago the Pacific Northwest was hit with some major ice storms that rearranged the grand furniture of the landscape. I climbed back in here last year and it had simply vanished! What had vanished? Everything! The tree, the falls, the entire scene! It was shocking to see such a beautiful oasis simply gone. I have to admit it feels kind of cool that I got the shot before that happened, but much more so, I will miss this place and l also wish more people could have seen it for themselves. It was one of those special places I loved to sit for a day in solitude.

 Having said that, in the Columbia River Gorge there still are over 100 major falls (on the Oregon side alone) just waiting to be seen and photographed. Some easy to visit (the commonly shot ones) and some rarely visited.

 Details for the more inquisitive: the image was shot with the Canon 5D Mark2, and the Canon 16-35L2 at 16mm. F/16, 100 ISO. A circular polarizer was used to cut the glare off the water and foliage. The image is two shots (2 stops apart in exposure) for Dynamic Range merged together in the brand new “Merge to HDR” in both Lightroom Raw and Camera Raw. This new function actually merges Raw data files together resulting in a single adjustable RAW file (as apposed to Tiff or PSD) containing imaging data from both files. As I previously guessed, I have found this function to work well with some select images and not so well with others.
